DID YOU KNOW THAT OVER-WATERING YOUR LAWN WEAKENS IT? WATERING EVERY DAY CAUSES THE ROOT SYSTEM TO BE SHALLOW, THEN ONE OR TWO DAYS IN JULY OR AUGUST WITHOUT WATER AND YOUR LAWN SHOWS SIGNS OF BURNING. WATERING LESS FREQUENTLY WILL HELP YOUR LAWN ESTABLISH A DEEPER ROOT SYSTEM. ALLOWING THE SOIL TO BECOME DRYER WILL CAUSE THE ROOTS TO SEEK MOISTER AND COOLER SOIL DEEPER DOWN, BECOMING MORE DISEASE RESISTANT AND MAKING A HEALTHIER, STRONGER TURF SYSTEM.

1. PLACE A LAYER OF MULCH AROUND TREES, SHRUBS AND FLOWERBEDS. MULCH WILL SLOW EVAPORATION AND LOWER SOIL TEMPERATURE AND INHIBITS WEED GROWTH. BARK, PEAT MOSS, GRAVEL, EVEN GRASS CLIPPINGS CAN BE USED AS EFFECTIVE MULCHES, 3-5 INCHES DEEP. AVOID BLACK PLASTIC, WATER CANNOT PENETRATE IT.

2. ADJUST YOUR SPRINKLING SYSTEM TO THE PERIOD. DON’T SET IT IN APRIL, AND THEN FORGET ABOUT IT UNTIL November. CHECK AROUND YOUR YARD MONTHLY FOR LEAKS AND CLOGGED, BROKEN OR MALFUNCTIONING HEADS. TUNE UP YOUR SYSTEM REGULARY. A BROWN SPOT MAY INDICATE A SYSTEM PROBLEM.

3. WATER BROWN SPOTS BY HAND RATHER THAN INCREASING CYCLES.

4. WATER DURING THE COOLER HOURS TO REDUCE EVAPORATION.

5. AERATE LAWNS ANNUALLY TO INCREASE WATER PENETRATION TO THE ROOTS.

6. RAISE THE SETTING OF YOUR MOWER. 2 1/2” TO 4” IS THE RECOMMENDED HEIGHT. THIS WILL SHADE AND COOL THE SOIL TEMPERATURE. LEAVE A LAYER OF CLIPPINGS EVERY FEW CUTTINGS TO MULCH AND FEED THE LAWN. KEEP MOWER BLADES SHARP.

7. PLUNGE A SCREWDRIVER INTO YOUR LAWN TO TEST FOR PENETRATION DEPTH. THE SOIL SHOULD BE MOIST 8” DOWN. THE AVERAGE ROOT SYSTEM IN UTAH LAWN IS 5”-6”, YET THE TYPE OF GRASSES WE USE SHOULD HAVE A ROOT SYSTEM OF 8”-12” DEEP.

8. CHECK TO SEE IF YOU ARE OVER-WATERING YOUR LAWN. COLLECT SOME EMPTY CONTAINERS (4 WOULD BE BEST) AND USING A PERMANENT MARKER, MARK ½”, ¾” AND 1” MARKS INSIDE. SET OUT THE CONTAINERS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS OF ONE SPRINKLING ZONE OR PATTERN. TIME HOW LONG IT TAKES TO FILL THE VARIOUS MARKS. USE THE “MONTHLY IRRIGATION SCHEDULE”* TO DETERMINE HOW OFTEN TO APPLY IRRIGATION TO YOUR YARD. ADJUST YOUR SPRINKLING SYSTEM TIMER OR WATERING HABITS TO CONFORM WITH THE GUIDE. THIS IRRIGATION TABLE IS SPECIFIC FOR UTAH COUNTY.

Lehi Residence Completed

We finished the back yard of this residence last week. The front yard, pictured above, was installed two years ago. With a back yard like this, it is like having your own resort.

This view is of the fire pit sitting area with a water feature behind it. Guests can enjoy the sound of trickling water while sitting around the fire.

The swimming pool has dark gray plaster, giving the water a deeper color of blue. Most swimming pools have white plaster giving the pool water a light blue cast.

Under the gazebo on the left is the dining area. The gazebo on the right shelters another comfortable sitting area.

The water feature is a core drilled stone. The water travels into a concealed pondless tank and recirculates back to the core drilled stone.

How nice would it be to spend a relaxing evening after swimming sitting next to a cozy fire?

We landscaped this beautiful home show in 2003 for Magleby Companies. It is always fun to go back to the jobs we have completed years later to see how everything in the yard has matured.

The next two pictures show one of the front corners of the house. All of the plant material has matured and filled in very nicely.

The left side of this photo gives a view of the dry creek bed.

The dry creek bed runs in front of the home. Burning bushes are great for foundation plantings and the leaves turn red in the autumn.

Raised beds add height as well as layers to the landscape.

The wisteria softens the fenceline and looks great over the custom gate.

Here is a large landscape boulder surrounded by large cobble rock. Cobble is very cost effective, because it does not need to be replaced every few years, like shredded bark does.

The walkout basement area has rock slab steps with a rock wall. Creeping Jenny was used to fill in the spaces between the rocks.A small planting area with annual flowers and Oregon Grape, lines the bottom layer of the boulders to add some color.

This area is just behind the backyard gate. Creeping Jenny, hostas, dogwood, and spirea was used in this bed.

More wisteria lines the backyard fence, along with roses, and perennials.

French Country-Adding Personal Style To Your Yard

This is a small yard with a big personality. The yard used to have a birch tree in the front yard. The birch was replaced with a Rose of Sharon (tree form). Rose of Sharon is a nice option for adding height with color. It blooms from midsummer to autumn.

The front flower bed combines annuals, perennials, & herbs amongst the shrubs. Herbs can be added to a front yard flower bed if you don't have a designated herb garden. They blend very well with the other plant material. The use of the landscape boulder creates an another texture to the landscape.

On the way to the front door, there is a quaint little sitting area with a bistro set. Be sure to notice how many little sitting areas are in this yard. The front door is very welcoming with the potted boxwood, & spruce topiary. The antique urn with a pom pom topiary, has annual flowers at the base to add additional color. You can tell by the front door mat that the homeowner loves all things French. Don't be afraid to let your personality flow outside to your yard.

Garden art adds personal style to the garden. The concrete statue is in a boxwood and rose bed. It makes a beautiful statement as you approach the front door and the gated courtyard.

The stone archway leads to the remodeled side yard. The side yard is now a private courtyard. Notice the plaque on the arch. You feel as if you are going inside a private French cottage garden.

An antique gate with weathered paint leads to the courtyard. Antiques are wonderful to add in the yard.

The courtyard used to be overtaken by English Ivy. It was gloomy and dark. After removing the majority of the ivy, we installed weed barrier fabric to prevent weeds & ivy from growing. The weed barrier fabric was then covered with tan cobble. The cobble creates a low maintenance yard and has a European flair as well. The stepping stones lead to the main sitting/entertaining area.

Boxwood in weathered terracotta pots, and annual flowers are perfect for a courtyard setting. Not to mention easy maintenance!

The use of potted plant material works well in areas that do not warrant installing a flower or shrub bed.

This vignette brings warmth & personality to the sitting area. The zinc lamp adds a nice glow to an evening outside entertaining friends. The homeowner is not afraid to accessorize. Can you tell that she is an interior designer?

This landscape is a perfect example of a "Staycation" yard. There is no need to leave the comfort of your home for a summer vacation. Complete with a trampoline, hot tub, fire pit, and swimming pool, who would want to leave?

The rock steps lead up to the trampoline pit. A flowing sidewalk goes around the entire back yard, and leads to the fire pit, grow boxes, hot tub, and swimming pool.

Timber grow boxes are surrounded by black cobble with weed fabric underneath to prevent weeds. Rock steps lead up from the sidewalk to a flagstone path and onto the fire pit.

Highland Residence

Flagstone paths are a great option for a walkway instead of plain concrete. They add an extra dimension to the landscape.

This is an example of a masonry fire pit surrounded by flagstone with sod between each stone. Groundcover such as wooly thyme & moss could be used as well.

Irish Moss, Scottish Moss, or thyme can also be used between flagstones.

Custom rock steps can be used instead of concrete. This gives the landscape a softer, more natural look.

This pool was filled last week, just in time for the hot weekend. Plans for this contemporary back yard include: an outdoor kitchen/barbeque area, two gazebos, fountains, fire pit, and several sitting areas. Keep checking back for photographs of the completed project.

Flag Poles & Fire Pits

There are items that can be installed into your landscape that can add to the look and living space to your yard. A flagpole can serve as more than just a place to display your national flag but one homeowner uses their flagpole as a way to notify neighbors. One flag represents that everyone is invited to come and use the family's pool and another flag says that the pool is closed.
We install flag poles of different heights & finishes. A bronze finish is shown here.

Installation of a firepit will definitely extend your living space from inside of the home to outside. Depending on the type of firepit that you choose will result in how you will use the area. We install a variety fire pits (more pictures will be posted soon). Shown here is an ASHbash fire pit with a tumbled block surround. ASHbash can also be used for a BBQ, Dutch Oven, and the perfect fire pit for roasting marshmallows.

Rock & Engineered Walls, etc.

This home used took advantage of the landscape and had several different tiers and living spaces created. Unfortunately we do not have pictures of everything but I hope that you will be able to get a feel of the landscaping. The homeowner used engineered walls as well as rock retaining walls in their landscape. The installation of fire pits, paver patios, planter beds and green spaces will provide areas unique areas that can be designated for different uses that will suit the homeowner and their family.

Flagstone is another material that can be incorporated into a landscape that can soften a walkway that is very different than the use of concrete.

Again, the use of stone slab steps create a softer feel compared to concret.

This engineered wall her shows how the blocks can be placed to create a curve along the driveway that leads to the home. There is a space or gap that is created that can be used as a planter bed where a drip irrigation system can be installed.

This homeowner wanted a French garden that include herb gardens, cobble walkways and a dog run. The style is very elegant and invites people to linger outside. The use of color in the plant materials really gives a pop to the yard. I like the use of planter beds as well as different sizes and heights of pots to keep the eye moving and not just at ground level.

Outdoor living spaces can really define an area as an extention of a home. Here are two different spaces that extend the home outside. One is attached to the home and the other is detached. Both create different feelings and views of the yard that help the family use the outdoors for an extended entertaining area.

Plant materials can help define different sections of a yard as well as provide a screen between neighbors. These trees will grow above the fence line and will give a soft screen that will also provide shade to the yard. The flowers below create a dividing line from the pool area to the archway of pear trees defining the new area in a colorful and beautiful way.

If you do not like the look of concrete then the use of a pavers can help give a hardscape area without the concrete look.
